Colorado rewrites its landmark AI law: Unpacking SB 26-189 and what it means for businesses
Governor Jared Polis signed SB 26-189 on May 14, 2026, repealing and reenacting the 2024 Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act (SB 24-205) before it took effect. The rewrite replaces the original 'high-risk AI system' and 'algorithmic discrimination' framework with a narrower automated decision-making technology (ADMT) regime centered on disclosures, adverse-outcome explanations, and human review, effective January 1, 2027.
