Think: ever since July 16, 1945, the "near" future has included, plausibly, the word in radioactive ruin. Perhaps this novel merely competes with tomorrow morning's news feed: a hundred thousand tech jobs gone with no law requiring anyone to say the machine did it reads like a scrapped chapter. My point is this: this genre is not predictive like Sci-Fi; rather, it is a critique of the already possible.
